Bricks serve as economic building material and there is a wide range of construction application for many types of Residential, Public and industrial building. Due to sturdy and long lasting building material, architect and Engineer will recommended for house construction, retaining wall, security barriers etc and this is best choice.

For a brick wall, the number of bricks you will need will depend on the size of wall and wether it is single or double skin wall and surface area of imperial brick.

A standard metric brick measures 215 x 102.5 x 65mm, with mortar joints of 10mm, vertically and horizontally. Bricks are produced in a broad range of sizes, but for general building work the most commonly used is referred to as a standard brick and measures 215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm.

The bricks you choose and the type of structure you will be building can dramatically impact the quantity you need. To help you, below is a list of common wall types.

Half-Brick Thick Walls: A half-brick thick wall (or single layer) has a width equal to the width of one brick. The stretcher side (long side of the brick) is exposed as bricks are laid horizontally. If you’re using a standard UK brick, this means your wall is 65mm wide. Half-Brick walls should not be used for load bearing or structural purposes.

Half brick wall limited to height, doesn’t exceed 500mm in height, safety can also be a big concern for freestanding half-brick walls as they have limited structural support, heavy winds can wreak havoc and turn your masonry into a pile of rubble! A half-brick thick wall will use 60 bricks per square metre if standard bricks are used.

Formula for number of bricks per m2, you need for Half-Brick Thick Wall = 60 bricks per square metre

One-Brick Thick Walls:- A one-brick thick (or two layers) wall is as wide as the long edge of a brick, making your wall 215mm wide (standard UK brick size). It consists of two different layers, which alternate between a stretcher course and a header course. A stretcher course is laid with the long edge of the brick exposed and is at least two bricks thick. While the header course is laid with the short side of the brick exposed to increase the structural integrity of the wall significantly.

One-Brick thick walls can be freestanding and are recommended for anything over 600mm in height. A one-brick thick wall will use 120 bricks per square metre if standard sized bricks are used.

Formula for number of bricks per m2, you need for One-Brick Thick Wall = 120 bricks per square metre

However, if your project includes imperial bricks (potentially 225 x 110 x 73mm), you will need approximately 57 per square metre.

How Many Bricks Do I Need

For a singular layer brick wall (half brick wall), multiply the length of the wall by the height to get the area. Multiply that area by 60 to get the number of bricks you should need, then add 5- 10% for wastage.

For a double layer brick wall (one brick wall), multiply the length of the wall by the height to get the area. Multiply that area by 120 to get the number of bricks you should need, then add 5- 10% for wastage.

How to calculate the number of bricks per m2 you need

To calculate number of the Standard metric size (215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm) brick per m2 you need, multiply the length (in meter) and thickness (in meter) of a brick to figure surface area of brick in square meter, divide the area of 1 square meter of wall by area of brick in m2, resulting figure will be number of bricks per m2. Add 5% – 10% additional bricks for accurate estimate.

Formula to calculate number of bricks per m2, you will need: Number of bricks = Square meter of brick wall ÷ Surface area of one brick. Given half brick wall area = 1m2, one standard brick area with mortar joints 10mm = 0.225m × 0.075m = 0.0169m2, number of bricks = 1/ 0.0169 = 60 nos bricks

Procedure to calculate number of bricks per square meter for Half-Brick Thick Walls (single layer) are following:

● Step 1) Determine the surface area of standard UK metric brick in square meter, which is W225mm x H75mm (10mm mortar joints included), Area = 0.225m × 0.075m = 0.0169m2,

● Step 2) To determining the number of bricks per m2 for Half-Brick Thick Walls (single layer), you will need, divide the surface area of brick wall (1m2) by surface area of one brick in m2, such as number of bricks per m2 = 1/ 0.0169 = 60 nos bricks.

● Step 3) Add 5% – 10% additional bricks (5% of 60 = 3 nos, 60 + 3 = 63 nos bricks, thus you will need approximately 63 nos bricks per m2 for Half-Brick Thick Walls (single layer).

Procedure to calculate number of bricks per square meter for One-Brick Thick Walls (double layer) are following:

● Step 1) Determine the surface area of standard UK metric brick in square meter, which is W225mm x H75mm (10mm mortar joints included), Area = 0.225m × 0.075m = 0.0169m2 for one layer, so, area for One-Brick Thick Walls (double layer) = 0.0169 × 2 = 0.0338m2

● Step 2) To determining the number of bricks per m2 for One-Brick Thick Walls (double layer), you will need, divide the surface area of brick wall (1m2) by surface area of one brick in m2, such as number of bricks per m2 = 1/ 0.0169 = 60 nos bricks, so, for 2 layers = 60×2 = 120.

● Step 3) Add 5% – 10% additional bricks (5% of 120 = 6 nos, 120 + 6 = 126 nos bricks, thus you will need approximately 126 nos bricks per m2 for One-Brick Thick Walls (double layer).

Number of bricks per m2

Generally, there are 60 standard metric size (215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm) bricks per m2 if you are building a half-brick wall or a one layer wall. Or if you are building a one-brick wall or two-layer wall, then there are 120 bricks required per square metre.

Conclusions:

Generally, there are 60 number of standard metric size (215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm) bricks per m2 if you are building a half-brick wall or a one layer wall. Or if you are building a one-brick wall or two-layer wall, then there are 120 bricks required per square metre.
