If you want to start new projects or construction of new driveway, you think about how much asphalt material do i need to complete the project and how to figure this required material. Generally quantity of required asphalt will measure in tons, cubic yards, per square foot, per square yards, or per cubic meter. But most common is tons and Yard.

How much asphalt do you need will depend on area of your projects or driveway, thickness of driveway and compactness of your asphalt driveway. Thickness of asphalt home driveway should be 2.5 to 3 inches may be sufficient, while a busy mixed-use property may require a compacted asphalt thickness of 4 inches or more and for light duty parking lots, you should use 1.5 to 2 inches of compacted hot mix asphalt to the subgrade.

Asphalt is composite material behave as concrete made of mixture of aggregates, sand and bitumen commonly used in construction of roads, Highway, airports, parking lots and many other types of payment walkway, driveway, roadway, patio, Street and etc, it is simply called as Asphalt or black top.

One cubic yard of hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 2.025 tons or 4050 Pound on average, and which will cover approximately between 110 to 160 square feet at 2 to 3 inches deep. One ton of hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 2,000 Pound, and which will cover approximately between 54 to 80 square feet at 2 to 3 inches deep.

How do i calculate how much asphalt i need

To calculate how much asphalt you need, simply multiply the Length, Width and Thickness in feet to get cubic footage. Divide the total cubic feet by 27 to get asphalt quantity in cubic yards. Multiply your cubic yard value by 2 to determine the project’s amount of asphalt in tons.

Formula to calculate how much asphalt do you need: 1) Asphalt quantity in Cubic feet = Length in feet × Width in feet × Thickness in feet, 2) Asphalt quantity in Yards = Cubic feet of asphalt ÷ 27, and 3) Asphalt quantity in Tons = Yards of asphalt × 2.

Procedure to calculate how much asphalt do you need are following:-

● 1) Take the measurements of Length in feet, Width in feet and thickness in inches

● 2) Convert the Thickness in inches into feet by dividing with 12

● 3) If you want to calculate asphalt quantity in cubic feet for your projects, then multiply the Length, Width and Thickness in feet to determine the project’s amount of asphalt in cubic feet i.e. Cubic feet of asphalt = L × B × H in feet.

● 4) If you want to calculate asphalt quantity in cubic yards for your projects, divide the total cubic feet by 27 to determine the project’s amount of asphalt in cubic Yards i.e. Yards of asphalt = Cubic feet ÷ 27.

● 5) If you want to calculate asphalt quantity in tons for your projects, multiply the total cubic yards by 2 to determine the project’s amount of asphalt in tons i.e. Tons of asphalt = Cubic Yard × 2.

For example, calculate the amount of asphalt required for 24×24 your home driveway. Let thickness of driveway is 2 inches deep, maths calculation: Thickness in feet = 2÷12 = 0.166′, Let’s do the calculation:-

1) Amount of asphalt in cubic feet = Length in feet × width in feet × thickness in feet = 24′ × 24′ × 0.166′ = 96 cubic footage.

2) Amount of asphalt in cubic Yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27 i. e 96/ 27 = 3.5 Yards

3) Amount of asphalt in Tons = Cubic Yards × 2 i. e 3.5 × 2 = 7 tons approx.

Thus, you would need approximately 96 cubic feet, or 3.5 cubic yards, or 7 Tons of hot mix asphalt for 24×24 home driveway at 2 inches deep.

Calculating yards to tons asphalt

Formula for asphalt calculator yards to tons: Tons of asphalt = Cubic Yards of asphalt × 2. If you are calculating yards to tons of asphalt, you simply multiply your cubic yards value by 2 to determine the project’s amount in tons. For example, 5 yards to tons, multiply 5 Yards times 2 , i.e 5×2, which comes 10 tons. One cubic Yard weighs about approximately 2 Tons.

Asphalt calculator tons to square feet

Formula for asphalt calculator tons to square feet: Square feet of asphalt at 3 inches deep = Tons of asphalt × 54 or at 2 inches deep = Tons of asphalt × 80. If you are calculating Tons of asphalt to square feet, you simply multiply your Tons value by 54 to determine the coverage of Tons of asphalt in square feet. For example, 5 Tons of asphalt to square feet, multiply 5 Tons by 54 , i.e 54×5, which comes 270 square feet. Hence, 5 tons of asphalt will cover approximately 270 square feet at 3 inches deep.

Asphalt calculator square feet to tons

Formula for asphalt calculator square feet to tons: Tons of asphalt required at 3″ deep = Square feet of driveway÷ 54 or 2″ deep = Square feet of driveway÷ 80. If you are calculating square feet to tons of asphalt, you simply divide your square feet of driveway value by 54 to determine the projects amount of asphalt in Tons. For example, 500 square feet to Tons of asphalt, Divide 500 square feet by 54 , i.e 500 ÷ 5 4, which comes 9.25 Tons. Hence, for 500 square feet of coverage you will need approximately 9.25 Tons of asphalt at 3 inches deep.

How to calculate asphalt tonnage

Formula to calculate asphalt Tonnage: tonnage of asphalt = Cubic Yards of asphalt × 2. If you are calculating tonnage of asphalt from yards, you simply multiply your cubic yards value by 2 to determine the project’s amount in tons. For example, 10 yards to tonnage, multiply 10 Yards times 2 , i.e 10×2, which comes 20 tonnage. One cubic Yard weighs about approximately 2 Tons.
