How deep should you go?
If you choose a 10mm aggregate such as Premium Quartzite Pea Gravel 10mm or Cottage Cream Gravel 10-20mm, you may want to lay it to a depth of around 30-40mm. If, however, you are buying gravel or granite chippings for driveways, you will probably need to lay it up to a depth of around 50mm-60mm.
If you decide to use a 20mm aggregate, you would probably be looking at laying to a depth of around 40mm-50mm. This would rise to around 50mm-60mm if you are planning a driveway.

As per general rule of thumb, a ton bag (bulk bag, jumbo bag, dumpy bag, or tonne bag) of gravel will cover approximately 10 square metres (10m2) area at recommended depth of 5cm (50mm) thick, and 16 square metres (16m2) at 3cm (30mm) thick.
To calculate how many square meters area will cover by a ton bag of gravel, divide yields of a ton bag (0.5m3 volume) of gravel by thickness in meters to get a ton bag gravel coverage in square meters.
At 5cm, A ton bag of gravel coverage
● Thickness 5cm in m = 5/ 100 = 0.05m
● A ton bag of gravel yields = 0.5m3
● Gravel coverage = 0.5m3/ 0.05m = 10m2
● Thus, gravel coverage 10m2 at 5cm.
