Cement required for 1 cubic meter brickwork 1:4 | how many cement bags required for 1m3 brickwork for 9″ and 4″ brick wall.
Mortar is prepared by mixing of Portland cement, Sand and water in different ratio such as 1:6, 1:5, 1:4 & 1:3 is called cement mortar. Mix ratio 1:4 means, 1 part of Portland cement mixed to 4 part’s of Sand, while ratio 1:5 means, 1 part of Portland cement mixed to 5 part’s of Sand. Most common mix ratio used for brickwork is 1:4 and 1:5.
Cement mortar used as adhesive or binding material for laying of brick in brick wall. All over the world in building structure and construction of house bricks or blocks are used for the the formation of brick wall, retaining wall and etc.
Amount of brickwork is calculated in different units like cubic meter, cubic feet, brass, square meter, square foot, but most common measuring unit used for measurements of brickwork is cubic meter. The question is how to calculate amount of cement, Sand and number of bricks for 1m3 brickwork.
Strength of brickwork will depend on many factors like Bond strength between laying of brick, thickness of cement mortar, quality of bricks which will be used and proper curing of water. In this article we know about Cement required for 1 cubic meter brickwork by taking mix 1:4 (1 part of cement mixed to 4 parts of Sand).
Cement required for 1 cubic meter brickwork 1:4
Brickwork is Laying of brick one another above by using cement mortar as binding or adhesive material. Brickwork is used for construction of house wall, water tank reservoir, boundary wall retaining wall and for many purpose in civil construction.
Mortar thickness: mortar thickness used for brickwork will be 10 mm to 12 mm thick. It is best thickness for increasing compressive strength of brick wall. More or less than above mention size of mortar thickness will decrease the strength of brickwork.
Nominal size of brick is 200mm in Length × 100mm in width × 100mm in Thickness. Their actual size is 10mm shorter than nominal, used for mortar thickness, so, their actual size of brick is 190mm in Length × 90mm in Width × 90mm in Thickness.

Calculate number of bricks required for 1 cubic meter of brickwork
To calculate number of bricks required for 1 cubic meter of brickwork, you will need to divide total volume of brickwork by volume of one brick with mortar. Volume of one brick with mortar is calculated by multiplying 0.20m Length × 0.10m Width × 0.10m Thickness) = 0.002m3, number of bricks per m3 = 1m3 ÷ 0.002m3 = 500 nos bricks. Thus, you will need 500 nos bricks in 1m3 brickwork.
Calculate quantity of cement mortar required for 1 cubic meter of brickwork
To calculate quantity of mortar needed for 1 cubic meter of brickwork, you should subtracting the actual volume of 500 bricks from total volume of brickwork, then resulting figure multiply by 1.33 to calculate dry volume of mortar.
Actual volume of 500 bricks = 500 × 0.19m × 0.09 m × 0.09m = 0.7695m3, wet volume of mortar = 1m3 – 0.7695m3 = 0.2305m3, dry volume of mortar = 0.2305 × 1.33 = 0.3m3. Thus you will need 0.3m3 of dry ingredients (cement & sand) of mortar for one cubic meter brickwork.
Quantity of cement required for 1 cubic meter of brickwork
Dry volume of required cement mortar per m3 is about 0.3m3, if mix ratio is 1:4 (1 part of cement mixed to 4 part’s of Sand), add all this ratio such as 1+4 =5, you get total proportion is equal to 5 and proportion of cement quantity in mix is 1/5 of dry volume of mortar.
Cement required for 1 cubic meter brickwork 1:4
● Density of cement = 1440kg/ m3
● One bag cement weighs = 50kg
● Cement quantity in m3 = 1/4 × 0.3m3 = 0.075 m3
● Cement quantity in kg = 0.075m3 × 1440kg /m3 = 108kg
● No. of bags of cement = 108÷50 = 2.16 bags,
2.16 bags or total 108 kg of cement quantity required for 1 cubic metre of brickwork by taking mix ratio 1:4 (1 part cement mixed to 4 parts of sand).
Quantity of Sand required for 1 cubic metre of brickwork
Dry volume of mortar is about 0.3m3, takin mix ratio 1:4, add this ratio such as 1+4 =5, you get total proportion is equal to 6 and part of sand quantity is 4/5 of dry volume of mortar.
Sand required for 1 cubic meter brickwork 1:4
● Density of Sand = 1600kg/ m3
● 1m3 = 35.32 cubic feet sand
● Sand quantity in m3 = 4/5 × 0.3m3 = 0.24m3
● Sand quantity in kg = 0.24m3 × 1600kg /m3 = 384 kilograms
● Sand quantity in Cu ft = 0.24 × 35.32 = 8.476 cubic feet.
Total 384kg, or 8.476 cubic feet, or 0.24m3 of sand quantity are required for 1 cubic metre of brickwork by taking mix ratio 1:4 (1 part cement mixed to 4 parts of sand).
