Staircase is most important part of building such as residential, commercial, factories, public, hospital and etc. It helps people to comfortably access different floor of a building.
When you are thinking about your new task designing and construction of staircase, length of staircase, total run, ceiling height, size of rise & run or tread is important factors that ensure good design and it make comfortable flight between one floor to another.
Staircase may be straight, L shaped, U shaped, spirally curved cantilever split and winder shape. Stair may be in a straight run leading from one floor to another without turn or change in direction, it may change direction to flight connected at 90-degree angle landing and in a multistorey or high rise building its turn 180-degree angle.
Staircase have many component like riser, tread, flight, landing, slop etc. Tread is horizontal part of staircase on which we first apply foot on this for moving from ground floor to upper floor.
The tread depth is measured from the back of one tread the back of next and their width is measured from one side to other.
Riser is the vertical portion between each tread on the stair, it may be missing in open stair, riser height measured from bottom of each tread to next upper tread, or riser height may also called vertical distance between two tread.
Length of staircase or length of a flight of stairs is equal to sum of all tread length or total run in one flight and landing width. Generally length of staircase depending on height of ceiling, riser height & tread width.
For most homes, staircase consist of two flight and one landing, generally the length of a flight of stairs is between 9 to 12 feet long. Many code suggest that riser height should be 6″ high, tread width is about 10″ and landing width is about 42″ or 3.5 feet.
How to calculate staircase length
To figure out staircase length, first divide the ceiling height by riser height, resulting give us number of riser, divide the no. of riser by 2 to get number of riser in a flight, no. of riser _ 1 give us number of tread or going in a flight, multiplication of number of tread and tread width give us total run and add the total run with landing width that result length of staircase or length of a flight of stairs.
For example:- To calculate the length of staircase for a 10 foot ceiling
1) no. of riser = 10×12″÷ 6″ = 20
2) no. of riser in one flight = 20÷2=10
3) no of tread = 10_1 = 9
4) total run = 9×10″ = 90″
5) staircase length = 90″ + 42″ = 132″ or 11′

Mathematics calculation such as :- 1) no. of riser = 15 × 12″÷ 6″ = 30, 2) no. of riser in a flight = 30÷ 2 = 15, 3) no of tread = 15_1 = 14, 4) total run = 14×10″ = 140″ & 5) staircase length = 140″ + 42″ = 182″ or 16′.
